Casey was pacing around in the training room. He was so antsy. So ready for a fight. Why, he wore his jewelry, bike shorts, and nothing else. His shirt socks and shoes were a neatly folded pile in the corner. He had the tallest cup of black coffee imaginable. His rings jingled on his fingers like bells on a cat.

The heist with jayden cross was pulled off with aplomb. They really stuck it to those... adjunct professors and students. Mega Stones for Rocket, with Casey... helping himself to one. The concept of it was foreign to him. But... he had a chance to train with someone who knew the ropes. To be of service to Rocket.

Casey smiled, as the door swung open. The steel shutter, on the submarine. He was on the opposite side of the arena, a flat tiled room buffed to a mirror shine by some grunt who had time to lean, and therefore time to clean. “Oh. It's you again. From the hot springs. I didn't know you worked here. Well... let's get to it.” He said, letting loose his Sceptile. Casey had its stone fixed as a pendant at the bottom of his black metal chain.

So, Casey Fincher has joined Team Rocket, huh? After his recent conversation with Summer Atreides, Mars had come to a few conclusions about the man awaiting him in the training facilities, but in this case two are most relevant:

It’s unclear if he will be an asset, so his abilities must be put to the test.
It’s unclear if he can be trusted, but if he can’t and he decides to turn his back on Team Rocket, then there are ways to deal with that minor inconvenience.

Mars has never been an optimist, he just takes things for what they are, and that also rings true when it comes to Rocket’s newest grunt. Unlike when they met at the Lavaridge Spa almost a year ago, this time there’s no charming and polite greeting when the underboss steps into the room, taking his place at one end of the arena.

”I do indeed.” He doesn’t bother with disclosing his rank, that’s something Fincher can learn himself later… or if he asks. ”A Sceptile, hm? Fair enough… Have you ever fought unusual pokémon?”

It’s what M.A.G.M.A training is all about. Something which Team Rocket members have to deal with often in a place like Hoenn.

From a Luxury Ball, Mars summons a huge Braviary of dark plumage… one that doesn’t really look like most Braviary.

It spreads its powerful wings, staring at Casey’s Sceptile from behind a mask of azure flames, and letting out a warlike screech, it flies up a few metres.

”Feel free to start whenever you’re ready.”

All over the training room, discrete cameras have been set up to record battle footage.

Casey slowly lowered himself, standing with feet apart. He stared down that bird, with its plume of fire. It looked like it could kill him in seconds. Why, the very thought of it had him sweating bullets. Casey gripped his pendant, twisting it. The necklace started to float off his skin, jingling around on its steel chain.

Sceptile started to grow, its pine branch tail growing into a pine tree in its own right. It looked as heavy as its entire body. Sceptile let out a roar, its entire body vibrating with energy. Casey looked to Mars, his eyes widening.

Casey smiled, looking to Mars. He couldn’t help it. He stood there, fish scales and fins printed all over his body. His chest heaved with breath. Why, he could go for another warmup right now. He wanted to do a handstand, and push-ups in that position. But now, he had to keep his restless energy down.

Sceptile opened with Dragon Pulse, a blast of purple, humid air aimed straight at Braviary. Sceptile’s eyes dilated, and a tear streamed down one.

Casey bit his lip. He couldn’t help but tear up, seeing this mutation for the first time. Tears slowly slid down his face, falling off his chin and hitting the floor. “Sceptile! You… did this to protect me…” He said, standing there and trembling. For all his posturing, he was overcome with feelings.

Unintended and likely for the first time, it would seem.

Mars says nothing about it, of course, simply watching the battle and doing no more than just so slightly quirk a brow when the Sceptile begins to transform. If anything, this can make for a good learning experience…

The DRAGON PULSE spreads over the arena, and ranged as it is, it hits the Braviary, causing it to stop its flight and begin to fall. This lasts only seconds. Soon enough, Boreas spreads his wings once more, flapping them with vigour in order to regain altitude.
[break][break]
”Nicely done, mega evolution can be a powerful asset. Pokémon change in appearance and strength, but some also gain new moves and typing…” With this said, Mars simply looks up towards his Braviary, and a command is calmly spoken:

”SPRINGTIDE STORM.”
[break][break]
The screech of the bird pierces through the training room, and a powerful gust is summoned. An indomitable hurricane filled with cherry blossom petals that are as sharp as knives, all of them headed for the Sceptile.

Sceptile tried to dodge, certainly. It was quite fast, once upon a time ago. But having to adjust to the new weight of its tail on the fly left it clipped by the storm. It didn’t have much left in the tank, and that gave Casey one idea, to have in his back pocket.

Sceptile leapt up, using Dragon Pulse again. A wave of purple, humid air traveled the length of the field, headed straight for Braviary.

Casey winced, watching their early momentum fizzle out right away. He was so close to fighting dirty, to using Endeavor and switching Sceptile out after. But right now, all eyes were on him.

Casey bit his lip. He’d much rather have a slap-fight on the ground than this. He looked to be sweating bullets. “This stone came out of a lab. I was sent to short the equipment and take as many as I could for Rocket. Did any make their way to you?” He said, calming himself by remembering bullying those lab techs. Why, he felt like a schoolboy again, both then and now. In using his physique to get what he wants, and disappointing the adult in the room. He couldn’t help but grimace.

Another DRAGON PULSE. It could be called repetitive or even predictable, but the fact of the matter is that it does get the job done when it comes to spreading the petals.

”Smart.” Mars praises.

However, praise aside, having seen the move before, Boreas expects it this time, and that makes it so he’s able to avoid it for the most part. He flies away from the wave of draconic energy, flying up, and once it passes him, he makes a sharp U-turn, facing his opponent once again.
[break][break]
This time, the Braviary chooses to retaliate all on its own, and feeling the winds that are being called forth, Mars allows it. A HURRICANE is created by Boreas’ wings, tousling the hair of the trainers and tugging at their clothes. Casey would perhaps notice that it’s much stronger than what the move usually is, all due to the avian pokémon’s SHEER FORCE.

Despite the way the wind pulls at him, Mars responds:

”They have not, but I’m glad to see you’re putting one of them to good use. Now, how about you show me what your Sceptile can really do?”

With that said, he smirks, watching both Casey and his pokémon.

Sceptile was thrown aside with ease by the hurricane despite its new weight. Furthermore, the stone’s power wore off, leaving it smaller and lighter. Casey winced, watching the display. He had one last idea to stall for time, maybe even even out their stamina.

Sceptile had its Overgrowth back. Even now, that pine tail was incredibly fragrant, shedding needles everywhere. Sceptile leapt up, despite its fatigue. Despite one more hit being enough to total it. Sceptile responded with Giga Drain.

Casey was sweating bullets. He couldn’t help but notice the cameras. Noticing that anyone could be taking notes on him flailing right now. All of his bluster melted away. He was stuck there in nothing but his gym shorts, and his eyes were wide.

“I can’t help but wonder… How much more I need to train to really be of use to anyone.” He admitted, glancing at the ground. All of his physical therapy, all of his rock climbing, and it didn’t amount to much.

The Sceptile’s time in its new form is cut short. A shame, but that’s all there is to it. At least its GIGA DRAIN allows it to take some of the Braviary’s stamina and heal for itself, but will that be enough for the battle to take a turn?

Perhaps, but that depends on what Boreas does next.
[break][break]
”As much as it takes.” Is the answer Mars gives Casey, staring at him from across the arena. He knows what it’s like. Even now, after all these years, he still trains and works on improving himself. It’s never over. ”You find your strengths and you hone them, but you also have to make sure your weaknesses don’t make you become a liability. It takes effort.”

It takes time.

Time that, at the moment, Casey may not have. Not in this battle, at least, since a warcry from the Braviary makes it clear that its end is soon to come. Flames are summoned by the avian pokémon’s psychic power, a large sphere that burns with intensity.

”You might want to take cover.”
[break][break]
With that said, the underboss watches as the Z-MOVE INFERNO OVERDRIVE falls upon the Sceptile.

Sceptile was within seconds engulfed by a blast of fire. The ensuing dry heat seemed to suck all the moisture from the air on his side of the field, leaving Casey unscathed but with a coughing fit that had him on all fours.

Casey glanced up, seeing his downed Sceptile. Covered in scratches and burns, and he winced. He dug out a pokeball and retired it for now, sparing the thing any further harm. He then looked up at that bird, with its burning crest. His eyes were wide, both with fear and a desire to someday best that thing.

.”I… Sorry for being weird there. I’m gonna be a father soon, and have a lot riding on me getting stronger. And I’d like to thank you for showing me how much further I have to go.” He admitted, between coughs. When the dry air sort of evened out, he had a chance to catch his breaths.

Casey turned to Mars, slowly making his way to his feet. He cleared his throat, and tried again for words. “So… I have a vague idea, but… if you had one thing I had to fix first, where should I start?” He asked, slowly forming a smile again.
